"Knowledge Is The Real Solution For Any Problem or Adversity"
Integrating Authentic Islamic Education with Psychological Well-being
Restoring the Lost Balance Between Religious and Worldly Knowledge
In recent years, Kerala has witnessed a significant rise in Islamic educational institutions and religious agencies. However, this growth has paradoxically been accompanied by an alarming increase in psychological disorders, family dysfunctions, rising divorce rates, domestic violence, and substance abuse, particularly among the youth. As a professional counselor and psychologist, I have observed that these challenges stem not from Islam itself but from misguided interpretations and unhealthy parenting practices influenced by unsolicited advice from uneducated peers and preachers.
The Crisis of Misguided Religious Education
Unlike the intellectual giants of the past, modern religious education often focuses on rote memorization rather than intellectual reasoning and practical wisdom. Many preachers today lack exposure to worldly knowledge, making their teachings rigid, devoid of light, and impractical for modern life. As a result:
-
Parents implement Islamic teachings without understanding the essence behind them.
-
Strict boundaries and unhealthy disciplinary methods create emotional distance between children and parents.
-
Misinterpretations, such as branding worldly education as haram, discourage progress and create intellectual stagnation.
-
Family conflicts arise due to literal interpretations of religious texts, ignoring historical and contextual reasoning.
-
Uneducated peers and preachers are controlling society by promoting a fear-based (Hell-centric) version of Islam rather than one rooted in mercy and wisdom. This approach instills guilt and fear rather than love and connection with God, pushing many youngsters away from Islam. Instead of seeing Islam as a path of enlightenment and balance, they view it as a rigid, oppressive force, leading some to reject religion entirely or seek fulfillment through unhealthy alternatives.
This rigid and uninformed approach has led to a loss of critical thinking, spiritual emptiness, and dysfunctional family structures, driving youth towards rebellion, substance abuse, and moral confusion.
The Wisdom of Islamic Scholars: A Lost Legacy
Islamic history is filled with intellectual legends who combined religious knowledge with scientific, philosophical, and worldly wisdom. Scholars such as:
-
Imam Ghazali emphasized that spiritual enlightenment requires both religious and worldly understanding.
-
Ibn Sina (Avicenna) was not only an Islamic scholar but also a pioneer in medicine and psychology.
-
Ibn Rushd (Averroes) excelled in philosophy and law, proving that true faith is strengthened by reason.
-
Ibn Taymiyyah emphasized that advancement in worldly sciences is necessary for a strong and knowledgeable Muslim community.
-
Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya advocated for learning practical skills and sciences to enhance society and fulfill Islamic duties effectively.
-
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal encouraged Muslims to pursue beneficial knowledge in various fields to uplift the ummah and contribute to civilization.
These scholars embraced knowledge in its entirety, understanding that religion and science are complementary, not contradictory. The loss of this tradition has reduced Islamic education to mere information transmission, stripping it of its true transformative power.
Understanding the Ranks of Scholars: Learning from the Highest Authorities
To restore the true essence of Islamic knowledge, we must seek guidance from the higher-ranked scholars whose works have stood the test of time. Scholars in Islam are the inheritors of the Prophets, dedicating their lives to preserving and disseminating knowledge. They are not mere transmitters of information but torchbearers of wisdom who guide the ummah (Muslim community) through their deep understanding of religious texts and the complexities of life.
Scholars can be classified based on their expertise:
-
Mufassir (Exegetes): Experts in Quranic interpretation.
-
Muhaddith (Hadith Scholars): Specialists in the sayings of the Prophet ï·º, ensuring their authenticity.
-
Aqidah Scholars: Theologians who safeguard correct Islamic beliefs.
-
Faqih (Jurists): Experts in Islamic law (fiqh), applying religious rulings to contemporary issues.
-
Spiritual Scholars: Those focused on inner purification and self-development.
It is imperative that we call people towards understanding Islam through the books and teachings of these true scholars—those who combined spiritual wisdom with intellectual reasoning. By doing so, we can counter the influence of misguided preachers and restore a balanced, enlightened approach to faith.
